Boku (juice) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

BoKu was a special kind of fruit juice that was sold in the United States from 1990 to 2003. It was made by a company called McCain Citrus, Inc. Unlike most juice boxes that were made for younger kids, BoKu was designed for teenagers and adults.

It came in a larger box than typical juice boxes. Instead of a straw, it had a pull tab, making it easy to open. The flavors were also chosen to appeal more to older people.

What Was BoKu Juice?

When BoKu first came out, most juice boxes were small and packed in lunchboxes for elementary school children. BoKu wanted to change that! They made their juice boxes bigger and gave them a pull tab instead of a straw. This made them feel more grown-up.

The company also picked flavors that adults and teenagers might like more, moving away from the very sweet, kid-focused flavors.

The Name BoKu

The name "BoKu" is a clever play on words. It sounds like the French word "beaucoup," which means "a lot." This name was chosen because BoKu juice boxes actually held more juice than the smaller boxes made for kids.

BoKu's TV Commercials

BoKu became well-known for its funny television commercials. These ads featured the famous comedian Richard Lewis. In the commercials, Richard Lewis would stand in front of the camera, holding a BoKu juice box. He would talk about how the juice was perfect for adults, not just children.

At the end of each commercial, after taking a sip of the juice, Richard Lewis would look at the camera and ask, "Is that too much to ask?!" This line became a memorable part of the ads.
