Boland's Bakery was a very important bakery in Dublin, Ireland, especially in the late 1800s. It was started by the Boland family and grew to be the biggest bakery in the city. They made many tasty things like bread, cakes, and flour. Over time, their biscuits became super popular and were their main product. The first bakery was near Capel Street in Dublin.

How Boland's Bakery Started

After Patrick Boland passed away in 1888, his family and a bishop named Nicholas Donnelly helped turn the bakery into a bigger company. This meant that many people could own small parts of the company by buying shares. Several members of the Boland family continued to be owners.

Where Boland's Bakery Made Its Products

Boland's Bakery had several places where they made their products all around Dublin. One of their most famous locations was at Boland's Mill near the Grand Canal Dock. They also had a big network to deliver their products. You could often see their vans, with the Boland's name on them, driving around Dublin until the late 1900s.

Boland's Bakery and Important Events

The main Boland's Bakery building, located at Grand Canal Street, played a part in the 1916 Rising. This was an important event in Irish history. A famous Irish leader named Éamon de Valera and his group used the building during this time.

Boland's Bakery also showed kindness during a difficult time. When people who didn't have jobs protested in Dublin, the bakery donated 500 loaves of bread to help them. This showed their support for the community.

Changes and New Owners

In the late 1970s, Boland's Bakery joined with another well-known company called Jacobs Biscuits Limited. Together, they formed a new company called Irish Biscuits Limited. Much of their biscuit making moved to a new factory in Tallaght, a town near Dublin.

Later, Irish Biscuits Limited was bought by different companies from other countries. Eventually, it became part of a French company called Groupe Danone. In 2004, an Irish company, the Fruitfield Food Group, bought it.

Boland's Name Today

Even though the company has changed hands many times, the Boland's name is still used today. You can find it on popular biscuits like custard creams, cream crackers, and Bourbon creams. These are now made by the Jacob Fruitfield Food Group. Also, the old "Boland's Flour Mills" sign can still be seen clearly at the Grand Canal Dock in Dublin.
