The Story of Bon Wier: A Town Built on Trees

How Bon Wier Got Started

Bon Wier was founded in 1905. It became a stop on the Jasper and Eastern Railroad, a train line mainly used to move lumber. The town was named after two important people from the Kirby Lumber Company:

  • B. F. Bonner was the manager of the company's sawmill.
  • Robert Withrow Wier was the town's doctor.

The company created the town to help with its growing lumber business, using the many trees in the area. A post office opened in Bon Wier in 1906.

Logging and Railroads

From 1918 to 1935, logging camps were active around Bon Wier, cutting down trees for the lumber industry. In 1948, a different company, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, took over the railroad line. Even as late as the 1990s, sawmills were still the main businesses in Bon Wier.
