The Bone Stone Graves are an ancient burial ground located in Ohio, a state in the United States. This special place is found northwest of a small community called Oregonia in Warren County. It holds the graves of people from the Fort Ancient culture, who were Native Americans living long ago.

What are the Bone Stone Graves?

The graves at this site are quite unique. The bodies were placed inside special boxes made from limestone. Finding a cemetery like this from the Fort Ancient period is very rare. This makes the Bone Stone Graves an important archaeological site. An archaeological site is a place where people find clues about how humans lived in the past.

Why are they special?

What makes this area even more interesting is that other ancient sites are nearby. For example, the Bone Mound II is only about 500 feet (150 m) away. Most Fort Ancient sites usually have only one type of burial, like a mound or a cemetery, but not both so close together. Because of this, experts think that people from two different groups, or "foci" (which means different groups within the same culture), might have lived near the Stone Graves.

So far, the Bone Stone Graves have never been fully dug up by archaeologists. This means there's still a lot to learn from this site! Future excavations (careful digging to uncover ancient things) could tell us much more about the people who lived there.

Protecting History

Because of their important historical value, the Bone Stone Graves were added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 1974. This list helps protect important places in the United States. The Bone Mound II was also added to the Register on the very same day.
