Bonnie Combes HeavyRunner was an important leader who helped Native American students. She started the Native American Studies program at the University of Montana. She also helped create The Payne Family Native American Center on the campus. Bonnie was a member of the Blackfeet Nation. She worked hard to support Native American students at the university until she passed away on November 24, 1997, after battling an illness.

About Bonnie HeavyRunner

Bonnie "Sim-sin" HeavyRunner grew up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. This reservation is located in Browning, Montana. She lived with her parents, Gene and Gertie HeavyRunner. She also had 12 brothers and sisters.

Her Parents' Story

Both of Bonnie's parents were taken from their tribes in Montana. They were sent to boarding schools far away. These schools were in Kansas and Pennsylvania. Later, they returned to Montana.

Education and Career

Bonnie earned a law degree from the University of Montana. After that, she became the director of the Native American Studies department. She worked to make this program strong. She passed away in 1997. This was one year after Native American Studies became a full major at the University of Montana.

Bonnie's Big Achievements

Bonnie HeavyRunner is famous for her work with the Native American Studies Program. She started this program at the University of Montana. She wanted to help the nearly 300 Native American students there.

Helping Students Succeed

Bonnie worked to find scholarships for students. She also set up mentoring programs. These programs helped students get advice and support.

A Special Place for Students

She had a great idea to give Native American students their own space. This idea led to the creation of The Payne Family Native American Center. Bonnie taught people why this center was so important. Because of her efforts, the main lobby of the Native American Center is named after her. It is called "The Bonnie "Sim-Sin" HeavyRunner Gathering Place."

Honoring Native American Culture

Bonnie also helped organize the first Kyi-Yo Academic Conferences. These conferences bring together Native American scholars. They share their knowledge and research. The Kyi-Yo Native American Student Association also hosts a yearly Kyi-Yo Pow Wow. This event includes a "Bonnie HeavyRunner Memorial Tipi Race." Students compete to set up a tipi the fastest to honor her memory.
