Becoming an Author and Illustrator
Bonnie Shemie was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She studied architecture, which is the art of designing buildings. In 1972, she moved to Montreal, Canada. For a few years, she worked as a graphic designer, creating visuals for advertisements. Later, she became a freelance illustrator, drawing pictures for various projects. Eventually, she started writing and illustrating her own children's books.

One of Bonnie Shemie's most famous projects is her Native Dwellings series. These books teach children about the amazing homes built by Indigenous peoples.
Her first book in this series was Houses of Snow, Skin and Bones: Native Dwellings, the Far North, published in 1989. This book described the homes built by Inuit tribes in Alaska. People really liked it because it had clear information and beautiful drawings. A reviewer from Canadian Children's Literature said it was "well-written and beautifully illustrated."
