How Bonpland Got Its Name
The town was originally called Santa Ana. On May 10, 1858, its name was changed to Bonpland. This was done to honor a famous French scientist named Aimé Bonpland. He was a naturalist, which means he studied plants and animals. His body rests in a special tomb, called a mausoleum, in the Cemetery of the Holy Cross in Paso de los Libres.
