What is a Cooperage?
A cooperage is a workshop where skilled craftspeople called coopers make barrels and other wooden containers. These containers are often used to store liquids like wine or oil, or to pack things like fish.
History of the Booth Cooperage
The Booth Cooperage was built a long time ago as part of a busy fishing business. In those days, there were no refrigerators or freezers like we have today. To keep fish fresh, they had to be packed in salt inside strong wooden barrels.
Making Barrels for Fish
The coopers at the Booth Cooperage worked hard to build these barrels. They carefully shaped wooden staves (long, narrow pieces of wood) and fitted them together with metal hoops. These barrels were essential for packing and shipping the fresh fish caught in Lake Superior. Without them, the fish couldn't be sent to markets far away.
New Life for an Old Building
Over time, the way we preserve and transport food changed. Refrigeration became common, and barrels were no longer needed as much for fish. The Booth Cooperage found a new purpose! Today, the building is used by a business that helps people go kayaking. It's a great example of how old buildings can be reused and given new life.
Why is it Historic?
The Booth Cooperage is important because it reminds us of Bayfield's past as a major fishing center. Because of its history and unique role, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's recognized as a special building that should be protected and remembered for future generations.
