Bootleg is an exciting miniseries for children that first aired in 2002. It was created by the BBC and is based on a popular book by Alex Shearer. The story was shown as a three-part TV series in the United Kingdom. Later, it was broadcast in Australia and other countries around the world.

The book has also been adapted in Japan. It became a manga comic series and a 13-episode online animated show. This Japanese version is called Chocolate Underground.

The Story of Bootleg

The story of Bootleg is about a new political group called the "Good for You" party, or GFY for short. When they come into power, they make a surprising rule: chocolate is banned!

Two brave kids, Smudger Moore and Huntley Hunter, really miss chocolate. They decide they want it back. Their adventure begins when they start secretly selling "bootleg" chocolate. This means they sell chocolate that is against the new rules.

As they continue, they join a secret group that is working against the GFY government. This group wants to bring chocolate back and change the government. The story builds up to a big moment where people take to the streets. They demand that chocolate be allowed again and that the government steps down. The series shows all the challenges and successes Smudger and Huntley face along the way.

Bootleg in Different Forms

The Book

The Bootleg story first appeared as a book. It was written by Alex Shearer and published by Macmillan Children's Books. The book came out on July 4, 2003.

The TV Series

The BBC turned the book into a three-part TV series. It was first shown in the United Kingdom. Later, it was also broadcast in Australia.

The TV show won a special award called the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for Best Children's Drama. The script for the show was written by Paul Smith. The TV series features well-known British actors like Martin Jarvis, Steven Geller, and Gemma Jones.

The Manga Comic

The Bootleg story was also made into a Japanese comic called a manga. A Japanese manga artist named Aiji Yamakawa created this version. The manga was published in a monthly shōjo manga magazine called Bessatsu Margaret. It appeared in the magazine from 2008 until its 15th issue. The entire manga story was collected into one book, which was released in October 2008.

The Anime Show

The manga version of Bootleg was then turned into an animated show, known as anime. Kiyoko Yoshimura wrote the script for the anime. Production I.G animated the show. The original character designs were provided by Aiji Yamakawa.

Japanese voice actors gave life to the characters. Fumie Mizusawa voiced Smudger Moore, and Toshiyuki Toyonaga voiced Huntley Hunter. Japanese singer Maaya Sakamoto voiced Carol Hunter. The anime's theme song, Make Up, and an insert song, Kirari, were sung by Kana Nishino. Both songs were released by SME Records.
