Border Gezi (born December 17, 1964 – died April 28, 2001) was an important Zimbabwean politician. He was a close friend and supporter of Robert Mugabe, who was the President of Zimbabwe. Gezi served as a government minister, looking after matters related to youth, gender, and jobs. Before that, he was a governor for a region in Zimbabwe.
Early Life and Political Start
Border Gezi grew up in a town called Mvurwi. He went to Holy Rosary Secondary School for his education. His first job was working as an accounts clerk for the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority. This company provides electricity to homes and businesses.
In 1990, Gezi decided to enter politics. He was elected to the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe, which is like the parliament where laws are made. He represented the area of Muzarabani. A few years later, in 1993, he became the chairman for the ZANU-PF political party in the Mashonaland Central region. The government then appointed him as the Provincial Governor for that region in 1996. This meant he was in charge of the area.
Role in Elections
In the year 2000, during the parliamentary election, Border Gezi played a big role. He was responsible for organizing groups of young people who supported the ZANU-PF party. These groups helped with political campaigns. Later that same year, at a special meeting for the ZANU-PF party, Gezi was given an important job. He became the Secretary for the Commissariat. His main task was to help organize the campaign for Robert Mugabe to be re-elected as President two years later.
Minister and Legacy
Border Gezi won the Bindura seat in the 2000 election. After this, he was appointed as the Minister for Gender, Youth and Employment. This role meant he worked on policies and programs for young people, women, and creating jobs. Many people saw him as a rising star in politics. They believed he had the potential to hold even higher positions in the future.
Sadly, Border Gezi passed away on April 28, 2001, at the age of 36. He was involved in a car accident on the road between Harare and Masvingo. His car skidded off the road after a tire burst and hit several Eucalyptus trees.
