Boris Dmitrievich Karvasarsky (Russian: Борис Дмитриевич Карвасарский; 3 February 1931 – 24 September 2013) was a very important Russian psychiatrist. He was a student of V. N. Myasishchev, another famous expert in the field. Karvasarsky is best known for creating a special type of therapy. It is called personality-oriented (reconstructive) psychotherapy.

His Early Life and Education

Boris Karvasarsky was born in a place called Derazhnia, Ukraine, on February 3, 1931. He studied medicine and graduated from the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy in 1954. After that, he continued his studies at the Bekhterev Psychoneurological Institute. He earned his first advanced degree, called Candidate of Science, in 1961. Later, in 1968, he earned his M.D. degree when he was 37 years old.

His Important Scientific Work

From 1961 until he passed away, Karvasarsky led a special department. This was the Department of Neuroses and Psychotherapy at the Bekhterev Research Institute. A neurosis is a mental health condition that causes distress but does not affect a person's ability to think clearly.

From 1982 to 1993, he also taught at the Leningrad Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education. There, he held a special position focusing on therapy for children and teenagers. In 1986, he became the head of a national center. This center helped coordinate scientific and methodic work in psychotherapy across Russia.

Karvasarsky was also a member of the team that edited several important journals. These included The Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology. He was also the president of the Russian Psychotherapeutic Association until his death. For about 20 years, he served as the chief psychotherapist for the Russian Ministry of Health.

Boris Karvasarsky developed a unique type of therapy. It is called personality-oriented (reconstructive) psychotherapy. He based his ideas on the work of his teacher, V. Myasishchev.
