Borja Oubiña's Club Career
Borja Oubiña was a midfielder who was good at winning the ball back from opponents. He grew up playing in the youth teams of his hometown club, RC Celta de Vigo. Borja was born in Vigo, Spain.
Starting at Celta Vigo
He first played for Celta's main team in the 2003–04 season. His first game was a 2–2 draw against Valencia CF. At that time, Celta was also playing in the UEFA Champions League. However, they ended up finishing near the bottom of La Liga that season. After that, Borja became a very important player for Celta in the following seasons.
Moving to Birmingham City
After Celta was moved down to a lower league in the 2006–07 season, Borja wanted to leave the club. He was still under contract, but he hoped to find a new team.
On August 31, 2007, Borja agreed to join Premier League team Birmingham City in England. He went there on a one-year loan.
Injury Problems Begin
Borja played his first game for Birmingham City on September 15. He came on as a substitute against Bolton Wanderers. In his very next match, against Liverpool, he got a serious injury. After only 13 minutes, he hurt his left knee in a collision with another player. Doctors expected him to be out of action for at least six months.
On February 9, 2008, Borja's loan at Birmingham was ended early. He went back to Vigo to recover from his injury.
Returning to Celta and More Injuries
More than a year after his last game, Borja played again on December 6. He played for four minutes in a game Celta lost 2–0. He played 14 more games during the 2008–09 season.
However, in September 2009, his injury problems returned. He had surgery in October to prepare for another knee operation. This meant he missed the rest of the 2009–10 season.
Back to Full Fitness
Borja finally got back to full fitness in the 2011–12 season. He played 28 matches that year. Celta then returned to Spain's top league, La Liga, after five years away.
Sadly, in the 2014–15 season, he didn't play any games because of more injuries.
Retirement from Football
On May 22, 2015, just five days after his 33rd birthday, Borja Oubiña announced that he was retiring from football.
