History of Bowleys Quarters
How Bowleys Quarters Got Its Name
Bowleys Quarters is named after Daniel Bowley. He was a merchant and sea captain in the mid-1700s. He owned a large amount of land, about 2,000 acres, near Baltimore. This area was once where people who worked for him lived.
From Hunting Ground to Vacation Spot
Later, the area became a special place for hunting waterfowl like ducks. Famous people, including baseball legend Babe Ruth, came here to hunt. Over time, Bowleys Quarters became a popular vacation spot. Many summer homes were built along the water.
Growth and Change in the Community
During the 1920s to the 1950s, many workers moved to Bowleys Quarters. They found jobs at nearby factories. These included the Glenn L. Martin company (now Lockheed Martin) and Bethlehem Steel. When these companies downsized, the community faced tough times. Bowleys Quarters became a mix of different types of homes.
Rebuilding After Hurricane Isabel
In the 1990s, people became more interested in homes near the water. Then, in September 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused a lot of damage. The storm brought major floods to Bowleys Quarters. According to The Baltimore Sun, 210 houses were destroyed. Another 632 homes had major damage.
Despite the damage, this event led to new growth. Many new homes were built, some selling for over $1 million. Today, Bowleys Quarters is a very popular place for waterfront living.
