Bowman Lake is a beautiful lake located in the northwest part of Glacier National Park in Montana. It's a bit hidden away, so it's not as crowded as some other spots in the park. Because it's in a more remote area, many visitors don't get to see it. However, people who live nearby know and love Bowman Lake, especially for its quiet campground. You reach the lake by driving about 6 miles (9.7 km) on a dirt road from the small town of Polebridge. Bowman Lake is quite large, covering about 2,250 acres (910 hectares). It's actually the third biggest lake in Glacier National Park, right after Lake McDonald and Saint Mary Lake.

Exploring Bowman Lake

Bowman Lake offers a peaceful escape for those who visit. It's a great place to enjoy nature and relax away from busy crowds.

Camping and Picnics

The campground at Bowman Lake is very close to the water's edge. Trees around the campsites help give campers privacy. If you're just visiting for the day, there's a nice picnic area where you can enjoy a quiet lunch.

Fun Activities on the Lake

There are many fun things to do at Bowman Lake.

  • Hiking: Several hiking trails are nearby, perfect for exploring the area.
  • Fishing: Anglers can enjoy fishing in the clear, cold waters.
  • Boating: Canoeing and kayaking are very popular ways to explore the lake. The water is very cold, like a glacier, so swimming might be a bit chilly!
  • Motorized Boats: You can use motorized boats on the lake, but they must have engines of 10 horsepower (7 kW) or less.

Getting There

The road to Bowman Lake is unpaved and can be bumpy. Because of this, large recreational vehicles (RVs) and trucks pulling trailers are not usually recommended. It's best to check with the park for current road conditions before you go.
