Boynton, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Boynton was a small, unincorporated community located in Sullivan County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it was a group of homes and buildings that didn't have its own local government, unlike a city or town.

History of Boynton

Boynton was officially planned out in 1877. This process, called "platting," is when someone draws up a map showing where streets, lots, and public areas will be. It's believed the community was named after Sumner Boynton, who was an important official in the county at that time.

A post office opened in Boynton in 1876, helping people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1953.

The Roy Blunt Reservoir Project

In recent years, a big change came to the area where Boynton once stood. By 2022, all the buildings and structures that were part of Boynton were removed. This was done to make way for a new project: the Roy Blunt Reservoir. A reservoir is like a very large, artificial lake built to store water, often for drinking or irrigation. The new reservoir will cover the land where Boynton used to be, meaning the old community site will be underwater.

Where Boynton Was Located

The community of Boynton was situated on Missouri Route N. It was about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Missouri Route 5. It was also located about 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of the town of Milan. A stream called East Locust Creek flowed along the west side of the community. In the past, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad also had tracks that passed through Boynton, connecting it to other places.
