Braeside: A Greenock Neighbourhood

Braeside is a community found on the western edge of Greenock. It is known for its local schools and a fascinating piece of history.

Schools and Learning

Braeside is home to important schools for young people.

  • Aileymill Primary School is a primary school for younger students.
  • Inverclyde Academy is a high school for older students.
  • There was also a school called Glenburn, which supported children with special needs. Plans to build a new prison on its site were considered, but this project is no longer happening.

A Hidden Treasure: The Braeside Coin Hoard

Braeside has a secret history! In 1955, something amazing was discovered during drainage work.

  • The Discovery: Workers found an old cow horn buried about 4 feet (1.2 m) underground.
  • What Was Inside: The horn was filled with about sixty Scottish coins! These coins were very old, dating from 1543 to around 1570. This means the treasure was likely buried in the mid-1570s.
  • Who Ruled Then: Some of the older coins were from the time of Mary, Queen of Scots. Other coins, like testoons, were from the reign of James VI of Scotland.
  • Where Are They Now?: Sadly, the old cow horn fell apart. Some coins were given to children and can no longer be found. However, 20 coins are now part of the collection at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. Another 30 coins are kept at the McLean Museum in Greenock. This coin hoard gives us a glimpse into Scotland's past!

Local Life and History

Like many areas in Greenock, Braeside gets its name from a farm that used to be there. It also has a local gathering spot.

  • The Burns Lounge: Braeside has a local pub called "The Burns Lounge," often known simply as "The Burns." It acts like a community hub for residents.
