Carlos Alberto Ferreira Braga (born March 29, 1907 – died December 24, 2006) was a famous Brazilian songwriter and singer. Most people knew him as Braguinha ("Little Braga") or João de Barro ("the Hornero"). He created many popular songs, especially for Brazil's lively Carnaval celebrations.

Who Was Braguinha?

Carlos Alberto Ferreira Braga was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He lived in this vibrant city his whole life. When he was young, he studied architecture. However, his real passion was music.

Why He Used a Different Name

When Braguinha started writing songs, he chose a special pen name: "João de Barro." This name comes from a type of bird that builds amazing mud nests. He used this name because his father did not want the family name connected with popular music and samba. At that time, popular music was not seen as a serious career.

Braguinha's Musical Journey

Braguinha is best known for his "marchinhas" (pronounced mar-SHEEN-yas). These are fun, light-hearted songs often played during Carnaval. Many of his marchinhas, some written as early as the 1930s, became classic Brazilian songs. People still sing them every year during Carnaval parties.

Famous Carnaval Hits

Many famous Carnaval singers, like Carmen Miranda, recorded Braguinha's marchinhas. These songs helped make Carnaval even more exciting and memorable. His music brought joy to millions of people.

Other Classic Songs

In 1937, Braguinha wrote the words for a song called "Carinhoso." The music for this song was composed by Pixinguinha many years before. "Carinhoso" became one of the most recorded songs in Brazilian music history. It is a beautiful example of a samba-choro song.

He also worked with the legendary samba composer Noel Rosa. Together, they wrote another beloved classic song called "Pastorinhas." Braguinha's ability to write both lively Carnaval tunes and touching lyrical songs showed his great talent.

His Lasting Legacy

Braguinha passed away on December 24, 2006, at the age of 99. He had lived a long life filled with music. His songs continue to be a big part of Brazilian culture. They remind everyone of his incredible talent and his love for music.
