Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Branums Point (also known as Branum) is a fascinating place in Dunklin County, Missouri. It's what we call an "extinct town" or a "ghost town." This means it was once a busy community where people lived and worked, but now it's no longer there. It's a bit like a town that disappeared!

What Was Branums Point?

Branums Point was officially recognized as a "populated place" by the GNIS (Geographic Names Information System). This system helps keep track of all the places in the United States. Even though it's gone now, it's still on the map as a historical location.

How Branums Point Began

The town of Branums Point was founded a long time ago, around the year 1830. A person named Michael Branum started the community. The town was named after him, so it became "Branum's Point."

The Branum Post Office

For a short time, Branums Point had its very own post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The Branum post office opened in 1901. It helped the people living there connect with others. However, it only stayed open for a few years. The post office closed its doors in 1909. After that, the town slowly faded away.
