History of Brashear

How Brashear Started

Brashear was founded in 1868. It was named after Joseph Brashear. He was the person who surveyed the land and helped plan the community. In 1898, G. W. Mahoney bought the Wise Ranch, which included this area. He divided the land into smaller farms. He also set aside land for a school, a church, and a cemetery.

Early Growth and Development

A post office opened in Brashear in 1899. W. G. Crain was the first postmaster. A school also started that same year. By 1905, the school had 149 students! This shows how quickly the community was growing.

Brashear in the Early 1900s

By 1914, Brashear was a busy place. It had several churches, including Baptist, Christian, and Methodist. There was also a bank and a local newspaper. The town even had a telegraph connection, which was like an early form of text messaging. About 400 people lived there at that time.

Changes Over Time

The population of Brashear changed over the years. In the mid-1920s, about 300 people lived there. By the late 1940s, the number grew to about 350. In 1948, Brashear had six stores, four churches, a school with two teachers, and a cotton gin.

During the 1960s, the population went down to about 280 people. This number stayed the same through 1990 and 2000. In the late 1980s, Brashear had four churches, a factory, a post office, and many scattered houses. Today, it remains a small, quiet community.
