Bread knife facts for kids

Bread knives are special knives used for cutting bread. They are one of many tools cooks use. What makes them unique is their serrated blades. This means the blade has a wavy or saw-like edge. This design helps the knife cut soft bread without squishing it flat.
The Story of Bread Knives
Special knives just for bread have an interesting past. One of the first modern bread knives was shown to the public in 1893. This happened at a big event called the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A company from Germany, Friedrich Dick, displayed their design there.
Later, an inventor named Joseph E. Burns got a patent for his bread knife. He was from Syracuse, New York, in the United States. His knife had special grooves, or serrations. These grooves were angled in a unique way. This design helped the knife cut very cleanly. It could slice both hard and soft bread easily. It didn't need a lot of force to cut through.
How Big Are Bread Knives?
Most bread knives are a good size for cutting loaves. They are usually between 15 and 25 centimeters (about 6 to 10 inches) long.
Some bread knives have an "offset" handle. This means the handle is raised higher than the blade. This design is helpful for cooks. It makes sure their knuckles don't hit the cutting board. This happens when the blade cuts all the way through the food.
