Bredgar Hoard facts for kids
The Bredgar Hoard is a special collection of ancient Roman gold coins. It was found in a village called Bredgar in Kent, England, back in 1957. This amazing discovery included 34 shiny gold coins, known as aurei. The newest coins were made between 41 and 42 AD. Today, you can see these valuable coins at the famous British Museum.
Discovering the Hoard
The Bredgar Hoard was found by a man named Bryan Hollands. He was digging to build the foundations for his new home in Gore Road, Bredgar. Imagine his surprise when he uncovered these ancient treasures!
What Coins Were Found?
The hoard contained 34 gold aurei. These coins were from different Roman emperors and leaders:
- One coin from Julius Caesar
- Twelve coins from Augustus
- Seventeen coins from Tiberius
- One coin from Nero Drusus
- Three coins from Claudius
Why Were the Coins Buried?
The coins were likely buried around 43 AD. This was a very important year because it was when the Roman invasion of Britain began. The Romans came to Britain to conquer it and make it part of their empire.
It's possible that the coins belonged to a Roman officer. This officer might have buried his savings for safekeeping during the invasion. Sadly, he may have been killed during a big fight called the Battle of the Medway. This battle was a key moment in the Roman invasion of Britain.
