The Bremen Town House is a really old and important building in Bremen, Maine. It's located right on Maine State Route 32. This building was first built in 1874. Later, in 1938, it was made a bit bigger.
For many years, it was the town's main meeting place, like a town hall. Even today, it's still a popular spot for people in the community to gather. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
About the Bremen Town House
The Bremen Town House is found in the middle of Bremen. It sits on the east side of Waldoboro Road, which is also called Route 32. This road is the main path through the town.
What the Building Looks Like
The building is made of wood and has two stories. It has an L-shape and a roof with two sloping sides that meet at a ridge, called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with horizontal wooden boards called clapboards. The whole building sits on a strong stone foundation.
The front part of the building faces the street. Its main entrance has simple decorations around the door and a small decorative top piece. On both sides of the door, there are windows on the first and second floors. There's also a fifth window in the triangular part of the roof.
A smaller, two-story section was added to the right side. This part also has a gabled roof. It has single windows on both levels facing the street. There is another entrance on the south side of this newer section, decorated just like the main front door.
History of the Town House
The Bremen Town House was built in 1874. It was originally built by a local group called the Good Templars. This group was part of a movement that encouraged people to live without alcohol.
In 1877, the town of Bremen started using the building for its town meetings. By 1884, the town bought the building completely. It was used for government meetings and social events until 1959. That's when the town moved its main offices to a new place.
Even though the town offices moved, the building is still owned by the town. It continues to be a very important place for community gatherings. In 1938, the building was made larger. This new part added a kitchen and space for the town's selectmen, who are like local leaders. Today, a local non-profit group helps manage the building for the town.
