History of Bretzville
The story of Bretzville began around 1850. That's when William Bretz Sr. first settled in this area. Later, in 1866, his son, William Bretz Jr., officially mapped out the land.
The town was first called "New Town." However, when people wanted to open a post office, the government suggested a name change. This was because "New Town" sounded too much like "Newton, Indiana." So, in June 1873, the town was renamed Bretzville. It was named after William Bretz Jr., who helped found it.
The post office in Bretzville opened in 1866. It served the community for many years before closing in 1915. The first school in Bretzville started in 1880, helping to educate the local children.
