Brewers rice facts for kids
Brewers' Rice: A Tiny Grain with Big Uses!
Brewers' rice is a special kind of rice that's made of very small pieces. Imagine you're milling rice to get perfect, whole grains. Sometimes, during this process, some rice kernels break into tiny fragments. These tiny pieces are called brewers' rice. They are separated from the larger, whole rice grains.
What is Brewers' Rice?
When rice is processed, or milled, to make it ready for us to eat, it creates different parts. Brewers' rice is one of these parts. It's basically a very small piece of a rice kernel, usually about one-quarter the size of a full rice grain. Another similar part is called "second heads," which are a bit bigger, about half to three-quarters the size of a full kernel.
How is Brewers' Rice Used?
Even though brewers' rice pieces are small and not usually eaten by people because of their size, they are still very useful! They have the same good nutrition as regular white rice.
- Pet Food: Brewers' rice is often used as an ingredient in pet food. It provides energy and nutrients for pets like dogs and cats.
- Dairy Feed: Sometimes, it's also used as feed for dairy animals, like cows.
- Other Products: While second heads are often used to make rice flour, brewers' rice can also be used in some other products where the tiny size doesn't matter as much.
So, even the smallest bits of rice find a purpose!
