Brian Cunningham was born in New York City. He grew up in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. His parents came from Jamaica. Brian went to public schools as he was growing up.

Working in Public Service
Before becoming an Assembly member, Brian Cunningham worked to help people. He was an aide for lawmakers in the New York State Legislature. He also worked as a counselor for CAMBA, Inc.. This organization helps people in need.
Running for Office
Brian Cunningham first tried to get elected in 2017. He ran for a spot on the New York City Council for the 40th district. He came in second place in the Democratic primary election. The person who won was Mathieu Eugene.
Cunningham then ran again in the main election. He had support from the Reform Party and the Working Families Party. He again finished second to the person already in office.
Becoming an Assembly Member
In March 2022, Brian Cunningham was elected to the New York State Assembly. This is a part of the New York State government. He took over the role from Diana Richardson.
In 2022, Cunningham first supported Yuh-Line Niou for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, he later changed his mind. This was because Niou supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
In June 2023, Brian Cunningham gave an award to Ezras Nashim. This group is special because it is the first all-female volunteer EMT team. He gave them the “2023 Women of Distinction Award.”
