Brian Connaughton was a brave Irish police officer, known as a Garda Síochána. He was born on 8 October 1899 and passed away on 26 March 1983. Brian Connaughton received the Scott Medal, which is the highest award for bravery given to members of the Garda Síochána.

Early Life and Joining the Gardaí

Brian Connaughton grew up in Ballinglas, a place near Mountbellew in County Galway, Ireland. Before he joined the police force, he worked as a farmer. He became a Garda, with the service number 4447.

A Brave Act in Drumshambo

In 1930, Brian Connaughton was serving as a Garda in Drumshambo, County Leitrim. He was working with another officer, Sergeant Michael Mullane. They showed great determination in their duty.

They successfully found and arrested two armed men. These men were part of a group that was breaking the law. The officers also managed to take away three rifles from them.

For their courage and hard work, both Sergeant Mullane and Garda Connaughton were honored. They received the Scott Medal on 28 July 1931. James Fitzgerald-Kenney, who was the Minister of Justice at the time, presented them with the awards. Sergeant Mullane received the gold medal, and Brian Connaughton received the silver medal. They were among the first officers to get this special award, which started in 1923.

Later Career and Retirement

Brian Connaughton continued his service in the Garda Síochána. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He retired from the force on 14 March 1965. Brian Connaughton died in 1983.
