Brian O. Hemphill is an important leader in education. He helps run universities. He is currently the president of Old Dominion University. This is his third time leading a university in just ten years! Before Old Dominion, he was the president of Radford University. He also led West Virginia State University.
On February 12, 2021, Dr. Hemphill was announced as the 9th president of Old Dominion University. This university is located in Norfolk, Virginia. He became president of West Virginia State University in 2012. Then he became president of Radford in 2016.
Before leading these universities, he worked at Northern Illinois University. There, he was a vice president. He helped students and managed new student sign-ups. He won several awards for his work. He was also praised for helping the campus after a very difficult event in 2008. Later, he edited a book about keeping university campuses safe. He also gave talks about how to be a good leader and manage problems in higher education.

Dr. Hemphill studied a lot to become a university leader.
- In 1992, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. He studied organizational communication at St. Augustine's University.
- In 1994, he received a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. He studied journalism and mass communication at Iowa State University.
- In 1998, he earned his highest degree, a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). He studied how to run universities at the University of Iowa.
