About Brian Lies
Brian Lies was born in Princeton, New Jersey. Today, he lives in eastern Massachusetts.
He loved art from a young age. When he was at Brown University, he studied literature and psychology. He also drew political cartoons for the school newspaper. After college, he studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He then drew political cartoons for big newspapers and magazines.
Brian Lies always wanted to create children's books. A person named Susan Sherman noticed his drawings. She liked how he showed feelings on the faces of his animal characters. This led him to illustrate his first children's book. It was for the Flatfoot Fox series, written by Eth Clifford.
His Amazing Books
One of Brian Lies's most popular books is Bats at the Beach. It became very famous after being read on a radio show. The book is about a group of bats having fun at the beach. They do funny things like sailing, surfing, and roasting marshmallows.
Brian Lies got the idea for Bats at the Beach from his daughter. She saw a frost pattern on a window and said it looked like "a bat, with sea foam." This sparked his imagination. He tries to make his animal characters look real, even when they act like humans.
The pictures in Bats at the Beach use lots of blues and browns. They often show moonlight, even if you don't see the moon itself.
The next book in the series, Bats at the Library, was also a big hit. Time.com named it one of the Top 10 Children's Books of 2008. It also won the 2010 Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award.
Brian Lies also wrote and illustrated Hamlet and the Magnificent Sandcastle. This book is about an optimistic pig named Hamlet. He and his porcupine friend, Quince, try to protect a huge sandcastle from the waves. People loved the watercolor pictures and funny details in this book.
His drawings for Deep in the Swamp by Donna M. Bateman were praised. They reminded some people of famous bird paintings by John James Audubon. This book also won an award in 2008.
