Brian Steen Nielsen (born 28 December 1968) is a former Danish professional footballer. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal. Brian had a long career, playing for 16 years. He played for Odense Boldklub three times and also played in other countries like Turkey, Japan, and Sweden.

Brian Steen Nielsen also played for the Danish national team. He played 66 games for his country between 1990 and 2002, scoring three goals. After he stopped playing, he worked as a director for the football club AGF until 2014.

Brian's Early Football Career

Brian Steen Nielsen was born in Vejle, Denmark. He started his professional football journey with Vejle Boldklub (VB) in October 1988. His talent was quickly noticed. In 1989, he won the Danish U21 Player of the Year award.

On 14 February 1990, Brian played his first game for the Danish national team. It was a friendly match against Egypt. He joined the game in the second half, and the match ended in a 0–0 draw. He played a few more games for Denmark until June 1991.

Moving Clubs and National Team Success

In 1992, Brian moved from Vejle to a different team, Odense Boldklub (OB). There, he helped his new team win the Danish Cup in 1993. After playing for OB for a year, he decided to play football abroad. He moved to Turkey to play for Fenerbahçe.

Playing for Fenerbahçe helped him get back into the Danish national team in 1993. During the time Richard Møller Nielsen was the coach, Brian was an important part of the team's defensive midfield. He often played alongside another strong player, John "Faxe" Jensen.

Returning to Denmark and Playing in Japan

In 1995, Brian moved back to Denmark to play for OB again. He was part of the Danish team that played in the UEFA Euro 1996 championship. After this tournament, he moved to Japan to play for Urawa Red Diamonds. When the national team coach, Richard Møller Nielsen, retired in June 1996, Brian was not picked for the team by the new coach, Bo Johansson.

Brian returned to OB for a third time in 1997. After that, he played for Akademisk Boldklub (AB). His experience made him a natural team captain there. His time at AB was very successful, and they won the Danish Cup in 1999.

Final Years in Football

While playing for AB, Brian also returned to the national team. He often played in midfield with the strong player Stig Tøfting. Later, a younger player named Thomas Gravesen joined the national team. Brian then started to play more as a substitute after the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. His national team career ended after playing for 11 minutes in the 2002 FIFA World Cup under the new coach, Morten Olsen.

Brian finished his club career in Denmark with AGF. He played his last years there alongside Stig Tøfting. He stopped playing football professionally in the fall of 2004. After retiring, he stayed with AGF for a while, working as a caretaker manager and later as a sports director.
