Brian Patrick Stelter (born September 3, 1985) is an American journalist. He is well-known for his work at CNN. From 2013 to 2022, he was CNN's main media reporter. He also hosted the CNN show Reliable Sources. Brian Stelter returned to CNN in 2024. Before CNN, he was a media reporter for The New York Times. He also edited a blog called TVNewser.
Brian Stelter's Early Life and Education
Brian Stelter was born on September 3, 1985. His hometown is Damascus, Maryland. His parents are Donna and Mark Stelter. He went to Damascus High School and finished in 2003.
After high school, he attended Towson University. While there, he was the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Towerlight. This was from 2005 to 2007. While still a student, he started a blog called TVNewser. This blog was all about television and cable news. He later sold his blog to a company called Mediabistro. It then became part of the Adweek blog network.
Brian Stelter's Career in Journalism
After finishing college in May 2007, Brian Stelter joined The New York Times. He became a media reporter at just 22 years old. This made him one of the youngest staff members there at the time.
In November 2013, he started a new role at CNN. He became the host of Reliable Sources. He also worked as a senior media reporter for CNN around the world. On August 18, 2022, CNN decided to cancel Reliable Sources. Brian Stelter left the network after the last episode on August 21. This cancellation was part of CNN's plan to save money. Brian Stelter felt sad about the show being canceled. He said it was important to speak up for fairness and open discussions.
In September 2022, Stelter joined a special program at Harvard Kennedy School. It was called the Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellowship.
Brian Stelter has also worked on TV shows and documentaries. He is a producer for the TV series The Morning Show. This show was inspired by his first book, Top of the Morning. He also helped produce a documentary film. It was called After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News.
On January 17, 2023, Brian Stelter led a discussion. It was about the dangers of false information. This event happened at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
Brian Stelter announced his return to CNN in September 2024. He is now the chief media analyst. He writes the newsletter for Reliable Sources again. He appears on TV and writes for CNN's website. However, he does not host his own show anymore.
Brian Stelter's Personal Life
Brian Stelter grew up in the Methodist faith. He is now nonreligious. In 2011, he dated Nicole Lapin, who was a news anchor. He told his editor about the relationship. He agreed not to report on her network while they were dating.
On February 22, 2014, he married Jamie Shupak. She is a traffic reporter for NY1. They had a Jewish wedding ceremony. They are raising their children in the Jewish faith. The family lives in Manhattan.
