Briar, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Briar is a small community located in Ripley County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather a group of homes and people. You can find it about seven miles west of Doniphan, Missouri, right on U.S. Route 160.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

Briar is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and people, but it doesn't have its own official city government or mayor. Instead, it's part of the larger Ripley County. The county government handles services like roads and law enforcement for these areas.

How Did Briar Get Its Name?

The community of Briar has an interesting history, especially when it comes to its name. Long ago, it was sometimes called "Briarcreek."

A post office opened there in 1879, and it was first named "Briar Creek." This name came from a nearby creek that had many green briar plants growing along its banks. Green briars are thorny plants that can grow in thick patches.

Later, in 1936, the name of the post office was officially shortened to just "Briar." The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed its doors in 1999.
