The Bridgewater Corners Bridge is a special bridge that helps Vermont Route 100A cross the Ottauquechee River in a small village called Bridgewater Corners, in Bridgewater, Vermont. It was built in 1928 by a company called the American Bridge Company. This happened after a really big flood caused a lot of damage. This bridge is a type of structure called a Pratt through truss. Because it's so important and well-built, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
About the Bridge
The Bridgewater Corners Bridge is located just south of U.S. Route 4 on Route 100A. It's also near the Long Trail Brewing Company. This bridge is a single-span Pratt through truss. This means it has a special framework that goes above the road, and the road passes through it.
Bridge Size and Design
The bridge is about 111 feet (34 m) long and 21.6 feet (6.6 m) wide. It rests on strong concrete supports called abutments. The road it carries is about 15 feet (4.6 m) above the river. The space for vehicles to pass through is about 15.1 feet (4.6 m) high.
The parts of the bridge's framework are lighter than those used in some other bridges from that time. Its truss parts are held together with special fasteners called rivets. The bridge deck, which is the part you drive on, is made of corrugated metal. It is supported by strong metal I-beams.
Why the Bridge Was Built
In 1927, the state of Vermont experienced a terrible flood. This flood destroyed many bridges across the state. The Bridgewater Corners Bridge was built the very next year, in 1928. It was part of a big effort to replace all the damaged bridges.
The bridge was built by the American Bridge Company. Its design was based on a standard plan used for many bridges built after the flood. However, the Bridgewater Corners Bridge is a bit shorter than typical Pratt through truss bridges. It also uses lighter materials, which makes it unique.
