The Brigham Hill Historic District is a special area in Norwich, Vermont. It shows what a rural landscape looked like in the 1800s. This district includes three old farm properties. They were all owned by the Brigham family. A very important person named Paul Brigham was part of this family. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. This means it is a place important to American history.

How Norwich Began

The town of Norwich was officially started in 1761. People began to settle there about ten years later. The Brigham Hill area was first settled by Elihu Baxter. He sold a large piece of land to Paul Brigham. Paul Brigham was from Connecticut.

Paul Brigham's Vermont Story

Paul Brigham moved to his new land in 1787. He built a new house there in 1788. Paul Brigham became very important in Vermont. He was the state's first Lieutenant Governor. This is a high-ranking leader in the state government. He helped lead Vermont after it became a state.

The Brigham Family Farms

Paul Brigham had two sons. They also built houses on land from their father's property. The Brigham family continued to farm this land for five generations. That means great-great-great-grandchildren worked the farms! They finally sold the land in the 1930s.

What Makes the District Special?

The Brigham Hill Historic District covers about 32 acres. It is mainly around where Brigham Hill Road meets Tilden Hill Road. This area includes open fields and farmland. It also has three old farmhouses. There is an English barn from around 1800. There is also a bank barn built around 1870.

The Paul Brigham House

The houses in the district have kept their original look from the front. The back and sides of the houses have been changed a little for modern uses. The Paul Brigham House is at 211 Brigham Hill Road. It is famous for its beautiful inside. A local artist named Perez Jones created the fine details.
