About Brigid Derham

Early Life and Education

Brigid Derham was born in London, England, in 1943. She studied art at the famous Slade School of Art starting in 1961. She worked very hard and earned a special distinction for her painting diploma in 1965. She then completed her post-graduate diploma in 1966.

While at the Slade School, Brigid was taught by a well-known artist named Frank Auerbach. She also won several important awards. In 1962, she received the Walter Neurath Prize for her drawing and painting skills. She also won travel scholarships in both 1965 and 1966. One of these scholarships was from the Italian government, which allowed her to study art in Italy for a while.

Teaching and Exhibitions

After her studies, Brigid Derham shared her artistic knowledge with others. She taught art part-time at the Byam Shaw School of Art. She also sometimes gave lessons at the Slade School, where she had once been a student.

Brigid's first solo art show was held in London in 1971 at the New Art Centre. This was a big step for her career. The Arts Council of Great Britain recognized her talent and gave her a grant in 1972. They also included her work in a group art show called British Painting '74 in 1974. Her paintings were also shown in other group exhibitions at the New Art Centre and the Royal Academy in London.

Brigid Derham passed away in London in 1980. She left behind a collection of vibrant and unique abstract paintings.
