Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Brinsley Butler, 1st Viscount Lanesborough (born 1670 – died March 6, 1735) was an important Irish politician and a noble. He held special titles and helped make laws in Ireland during his time.

Who Was Brinsley Butler?

Brinsley Butler was the son of Francis Butler and Judith Jones. He grew up to become a key figure in Irish politics. His life shows how people gained power and influence in Ireland centuries ago.

His Start in Politics

Brinsley Butler began his political journey in the Irish House of Commons. This was like a parliament where elected people represented different areas. He represented the area of Kells from 1703 to 1713. After that, he served for Belturbet from 1713 to 1724.

Moving to the House of Lords

In 1724, something big happened for Brinsley Butler. His brother, Theophilus Butler, passed away. Brinsley then inherited his brother's noble title, known as a peerage. This meant he became a "peer" and could join the Irish House of Lords. The House of Lords was another part of the parliament, usually for nobles.

Important Roles and Titles

Brinsley Butler continued to gain more important roles. In 1726, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen in Ireland. Then, in 1728, he received an even higher noble title. He was made Viscount Lanesborough in the Peerage of Ireland. A Viscount is a noble rank, higher than a Baron but lower than an Earl.

His Family Life

Brinsley Butler married Catharine Pooley. They had many children together. He was later succeeded in his noble titles by his son, Humphrey Butler. Humphrey later became an Earl of Lanesborough in 1756, which is an even higher noble rank.
