History of Bristol
Early Settlers
The first person to settle in the Bristol area was Rollin Tuttle. He arrived in April 1830. Another early settler, Levi Grant, arrived the next month.
Border Disputes
During the 1990s, the Town of Bristol had disagreements with Pleasant Prairie about their shared borders. These disagreements were about which areas belonged to which town. In 1997, the two towns agreed on their boundaries. Because of this agreement, a court in Kenosha County stopped any attempts by Pleasant Prairie to take over parts of Bristol.
How Bristol Ended
In 1968, the Town of Bristol tried to become a village, but a state court said no.
Later, in 2008, the western part of Bristol tried again to become its own village. A state court said no to this attempt on January 19, 2009.
However, a smaller part of the town's northwest corner tried to become a village in March 2009. This time, the court approved it on September 17, 2009. This led to the creation of the Village of Bristol that same year.
On June 29, 2010, there was a special vote. Most of the remaining Town of Bristol joined the new Village of Bristol. A small part of the town joined the Village of Pleasant Prairie. These changes officially happened on July 4, 2010. After this, the Town of Bristol officially stopped existing.
