Britain is a small, unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located along Milltown Creek. You can find it on the eastern side of Short Hill Mountain. It sits where Mountain Road (VA Route 690) meets Britain Road.
History of Britain
Britain was first known as Guinea. It later got its name from Calvin Britain, a senator from Michigan. In the mid-1800s, this village became home to a community of free African Americans.
In 1880, the Mount Sinai Free Baptist Church was built here. This church also served as a school for the community. It helped educate local children until 1915. Britain was special because, unlike many other African American settlements in Loudoun County, it had its own post office.
However, the African American residents started moving away in the early 1900s. The last Black families left Britain by the 1920s.
