British Motor Corporation facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The British Motor Corporation, often called BMC, was a big car company in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1952 when two large car makers, the Austin Motor Company and the Nuffield Organisation, joined together. BMC made many popular cars, including the famous Mini! Over the years, BMC grew even bigger by joining with other companies.

A Brief History of BMC

BMC grew by taking over other companies. This helped them make more parts for their cars.

  • In September 1965, BMC took control of Pressed Steel. This company made car bodies, including those for Jaguar.
  • A year later, in September 1966, BMC joined with Jaguar Cars Limited. Jaguar was famous for its luxury and sports cars.
  • Soon after, on December 14, 1966, BMC changed its name. It became known as British Motor Holdings Limited, or BMH for short.
  • BMH continued to grow. In May 1968, it merged with Leyland Motor Corporation Limited. Leyland made trucks and buses. They also owned another car company called Standard-Triumph International Limited.
  • After this big merger, BMH became a major part of a new, even larger company called British Leyland Motor Corporation.
