Broad Humor Film Festival facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Broad Humor Film Festival is a special event held every year in Los Angeles, California. It's all about funny movies made by women. This festival shows films and screenplays (movie scripts) that are written and directed only by women. It started in 2005 to help more women get chances to create movies. The festival has competitions for both long and short films. It also helps filmmakers and writers who have been part of the festival before, encouraging them to make new work.

The Story of Broad Humor Film Festival

Why the Festival Started

The Broad Humor Film Festival began in 2005. A filmmaker named Susan diRende created it. She noticed that women were not often recognized in big film awards like the Oscars. Also, not many women were hired as directors in movies and TV. So, she wanted to create a place where women's comedic talents could shine.

The festival started as a small, community effort. In its very first year, MovieMaker Magazine called it one of the top five special film festivals.

Who Can Join the Festival?

This festival shows movies where all the main creative people are women. This means the writing and directing must be done only by women. Most of the films sent to the festival come from the United States and Canada. However, they have also received films from Europe, Asia, and Australia.

International Recognition

The festival has even been invited to Italy twice! In 2007, they showed a special "Broads Abroad" program in Rome. Then, in 2008, they were invited again to help launch programs for women in Tuscany, Italy.

New Leadership and Future

In 2014, Michelle Clay became the Executive Director of the festival. She now helps with the main planning and programming. The founder, Susan diRende, still helps the Broad Humor brand grow. She also continues to help choose films for the festival.

Sadly, the Broad Humor Film Festival was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
