What is the Broadcasting Tower?
The Broadcasting Tower is a modern building in Leeds, England. It's located right next to other university buildings. This makes it easy for students to get to their classes.
The tower is split into two main sections. One part is used by the university. It has classrooms and offices for students studying arts, environment, and technology. The other part is made up of student apartments. This is where many university students live while they study.
Who Designed This Cool Building?
The Broadcasting Tower was designed by a famous group of architects. They are called Feilden Clegg Bradley. These architects are very good at what they do.
They even won a big award for their work! This award is called the Stirling Prize. It's one of the most important awards for architecture in the United Kingdom. Winning it means they designed something truly special.
Why Does It Look Rusty?
You might notice that the Broadcasting Tower looks a bit rusty. But don't worry, it's supposed to look that way! The building is covered in a special type of metal. This metal is called COR-TEN weathering steel.
This steel is designed to form a protective layer over time. This layer looks like rust. However, it actually protects the building from the weather. It helps the building last a very long time.
Who Owns the Student Homes?
The student apartments inside the Broadcasting Tower are owned by a company called Unite. Unite is one of the biggest companies in the UK. They provide homes just for university students.
They have homes for over 46,000 students! These homes are in many different cities across the UK. Since September 2016, only students from Leeds Beckett University can live in the apartments at Broadcasting Tower.
An Award-Winning Building!
The Broadcasting Tower has won a very important award. In June 2010, the building was named the "Best Tall Building in the World." This award was given by a group called the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
This council looks at tall buildings all over the world. They choose the best ones based on their design and how well they work. Winning this award shows how special and well-designed the Broadcasting Tower is.
