A Look Back at Broadway Shopping Centre

From Department Store to Shopping Hub

The building that houses Broadway Shopping Centre has a long and interesting past. It was originally one of two large Grace Bros department stores. This department store first opened its doors in 1923. The other Grace Bros building nearby is now used for university student accommodation.

In 1997, a company called Walker Corporation began working on restoring these old buildings. Their plan was to create both student housing and a brand-new shopping centre.

Opening and Growth

The Broadway Shopping Centre officially opened in 1998. Walker Corporation owned and managed the centre for several years. Then, in December 2006, the centre was sold to another company called Mirvac.

In 2007, the shopping centre got even bigger when an extra floor was added. This gave shoppers even more space and stores to enjoy.

Modern Upgrades

Big changes came to the centre in 2015. Major upgrades began, costing about $55 million. These improvements were finished in August 2016. The upgrades included a redesigned food court, making it even more inviting. Many new fashion stores were also added, giving shoppers more choices for clothes and accessories.

Safety at the Centre

Minor Incidents

Like any large public place, Broadway Shopping Centre has had a few minor incidents over the years. For example, on 12 February 2008, a small fire started due to an electrical issue in the lower levels. Everyone was safe, and no one was hurt. Emergency services helped shoppers who were briefly stuck in lifts because the power went out.

Another small fire occurred on 29 April 2016, on level three. As a safety measure, hundreds of shoppers and workers were evacuated from the centre. Again, everyone was safe, and the situation was quickly managed.
