Brockerhoff Mill, also known as Roopsburg Mill, is a very old building in Benner Township, Pennsylvania. It's a special type of mill called a grist mill. Grist mills were important places where farmers brought their grain, like wheat or corn, to be ground into flour or meal. This mill has a long history and shows us what buildings were like a long time ago.

A Look at the Mill's History

The Brockerhoff Mill was built around 1862. That means it's over 160 years old! It's a big building, about 56 feet long and 40 feet wide. It has four stories and is made of strong brick. The bottom part sits on a solid limestone foundation. The roof is shaped like a triangle, which is called a gable roof.

Who Built the Mill?

A man named Henry Brockerhoff (who lived from 1794 to 1878) built this mill. He was also known for building another important local spot, the Brockerhoff Hotel. Henry Brockerhoff's work helped shape the area where he lived.

What is a Mill Race?

Near the mill, you can still see parts of something called a "mill race." A mill race was like a special channel or ditch built to carry water from a river or stream directly to the mill. This moving water would then power the mill's machinery, turning the big grinding stones inside. It was a clever way to use nature's power!

Why is Brockerhoff Mill Important?

The Brockerhoff Mill is considered a very important historical building. Because of its history and how well it shows us what old grist mills were like, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the mill and makes sure people remember its story for many years to come.
