The Brockerhoff Hotel is a very old and important building located in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. It's in Centre County, Pennsylvania, and has been a part of the town's history for a long time. This large brick building was first built way back in 1866.

About the Brockerhoff Hotel

The Brockerhoff Hotel is quite big! It measures about 170 feet long and 60 feet wide. It sits on a strong stone foundation. A man named Henry Brockerhoff (who lived from 1794 to 1878) had the hotel built. He was also responsible for building another important local landmark, the Brockerhoff Mill.

Its Unique Style

When the hotel was first built, it was designed in the Italianate style. This style was popular in the mid-1800s and often featured tall windows and decorative brackets under the roof.

Later, in the 1880s, the hotel got a makeover. It was updated with a special type of roof called a mansard roof. This roof has slopes on all four sides, often with dormer windows sticking out. This renovation combined two other cool architectural styles: Second Empire and Queen Anne.

  • The Second Empire style often includes mansard roofs and fancy details.
  • The Queen Anne style is known for its towers, turrets, and varied textures.

The roof of the Brockerhoff Hotel is especially interesting because it uses multicolored slate tiles. This gives it a unique and eye-catching look.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its age, unique architecture, and importance to the area, the Brockerhoff Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1977. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps protect the building and recognize its value.

The hotel is also part of a larger area called the Bellefonte Historic District. This means it's one of many historic buildings in Bellefonte that together tell the story of the town's past.
