The Bellefonte Historic District is a special area in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. It's like a time capsule that helps us remember the past. This district protects many old and important buildings.

It's called a "historic district" because it has a lot of buildings that show how people lived and worked long ago. These buildings are important for understanding history.

What is the Bellefonte Historic District?

The Bellefonte Historic District is a large area in the town of Bellefonte. It includes the main shopping area and the homes around it. There are 296 buildings in this district that are considered "contributing." This means they add to the area's historical importance.

The oldest building in the district is the Col. James Dunlop House. It was built way back in 1795! Imagine how much history that house has seen.

Exploring Historic Buildings

Many interesting buildings are part of this historic district. Some of them are not homes. For example, you can find the St. John's Roman Catholic Church here. There's also the Crider Exchange, built in 1889, and the Temple Court Building from 1894.

Other important buildings include the First National Bank Building and the old Pennsylvania Railroad Station. These places show how people did business and traveled in the past.

Special Places in the District

Some buildings in the district are so important that they are listed separately. These include the Brockerhoff Hotel, the Centre County Courthouse, and the Gamble Mill. Also, the McAllister-Beaver House and the Miles-Humes House are part of this special group.

Sadly, two other famous buildings, the Bellefonte Academy and the Bush House Hotel, were once listed too. However, they were lost in fires in 2004 and 2006.

Why is it a "Historic Place"?

The Bellefonte Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This is a list kept by the United States government. It helps protect places that are important to the history of our country. When a place is on this list, it means it's recognized for its special historical value.
