Early Life and Education

Brookie Maxwell was born in Manhattan, New York City. Her father, William Maxwell, was a literary editor for The New Yorker magazine. Her mother, Emily Noyes, was a poet.

Brookie loved art from a young age. She studied Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts. She earned her degree in 1977.

Making a Difference Through Art

Brookie Maxwell believed art could help children. In 1986, she started the Creative Arts Workshops. These workshops helped children living in homeless shelters and hotels in New York.

One of the most famous projects was "Calle de Suenos." This means "Street of Dreams" in English. It was a huge mural, about 5,000 square feet! You could find it on Lexington Avenue in New York.

Supporting New Artists

In 1999, Brookie Maxwell opened Gallery 138. This art gallery was located in Soho, a famous art area in New York City. Her goal was to show the work of new and upcoming artists. She helped many talented people share their art with the world.

Brookie Maxwell's artwork is part of important collections. These include the US Department of State and the Brooklyn Museum.
