Broomloan Road Primary School facts for kids
Broomloan Road Primary School was a primary school located in Govan, a part of Glasgow, Scotland. It was once the biggest school built by the Govan School Board. This board was in charge of setting up and running schools in the Govan area.
About Broomloan Road Primary School
Broomloan Road Primary School was a large school with two main buildings. The first building opened in 1875. It was designed by an architect named Alexander Watt. Later, in 1894, a second building was added. This newer part was made of red sandstone and was designed by H&D Barclay. The school served many students in Govan for a long time. It finally closed its doors in the late 1960s.
What Happened to the Buildings?
After the school closed, the buildings were used for other things. The red sandstone building became a school for younger children called St. Saviour's Infants during the 1970s. Later, it was used by St. Gerards as an extra building. In the early 1980s, it became a place for the community called the Summertown Community Centre. This building closed in the early 1990s.
The older yellow sandstone building became Broomloan Road Nursery School in the late 1970s. A nursery is a place for very young children. This nursery also closed in the early 1990s. Both school buildings were empty and boarded up by the mid-2000s. They were left empty for many years.
These buildings were considered important because of their history and design. They were protected as a category B listed building. This means they were special and should have been kept safe.
Sadly, the yellow sandstone building caught fire in May 2014. It was almost completely destroyed. The 1894 red sandstone building also caught fire later that same year. Because of the damage from the fires, both buildings had to be taken down completely.
A Famous Former Student

He is well-known for managing Manchester United Football Club for many years. After Broomloan Road, he went on to attend Govan High School.
