Brown's Velvet Dairy facts for kids
Brown's Dairy is a well-known company in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It started way back in 1905. For many years, it was called Brown's Velvet Dairy. This company has a long history of providing milk and other dairy products to people in the area.
A Sweet History of Dairy
Brown's Velvet Dairy was once the oldest and biggest dairy company in New Orleans. It sold its products all across the Gulf States region. Imagine enjoying their delicious ice cream! Some of their unique ice cream flavors even included Creole cream cheese.
In 1993, another company called Marigold Foods bought the ice cream part of Brown's Velvet. They wanted to make their own Kemps brand of frozen desserts even bigger. But don't worry, Brown's Dairy kept its main business: selling milk.
Staying in New Orleans
Brown's Dairy wanted to keep its operations in New Orleans. So, they made an agreement with the city. This agreement allowed them to use a specific part of Thalia Street for their dairy plant.
Over time, Brown's Dairy was bought by a company called Southern Foods Group. This group also took over two other local dairy companies, Barbe's and Walker-Roemer. This helped them serve even more customers.
Today, Brown's Dairy is part of a larger company called Dean Foods. Even though it's part of a bigger group, it still carries on its long tradition of providing dairy products.
