Brown Park facts for kids

Brown Park is a cool place in South Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska. You can find it at 5708 South 15th Street. This park has a really old baseball field that's over 100 years old! Famous baseball players like Ty Cobb once played games there.

Park History

Brown Park is a special historic park run by the City of Omaha. It was created way back in 1891. The park is named after a farmer who owned the land. The city bought his land in the 1910s to create this park and its baseball field.

Some people think baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played here. But they actually played at a different park nearby, called League Park, during a special tour in 1927.

The Famous Baseball Field

The baseball field at Brown Park is very important to the community. It's the home field for the Omaha South High School baseball team. Another team, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1, also plays their games here for the Nebraska Reserve Baseball League.

The City of Omaha recently made some great improvements to the field. It was even renamed the John Stella Field at Brown Park. This was done to honor John Stella, who was a big supporter of baseball in South Omaha for many years. He coached the South High School team from 1985 to 2001. He also coached for American Legion baseball since 1982.

In 2019, a special type of artificial grass, called Field Turf, was added to the infield. The outfield also got Field Turf in the spring of 2020. Since 2018, the Bellevue University Bruins baseball team has also used Brown Park as their home field.

Park Pavilion

Brown Park also has a historic building called the Brown Park Pavilion. It was built in the 1910s. This building is about 700 square feet and has a small stage inside. It also has a wraparound porch, which is a great place to relax.
