Brown Park facts for kids

Brown Park is a cool place located at 5708 South 15th Street in the Brown Park neighborhood of South Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska. It's famous for its super old baseball field, which is over 100 years old! Even legendary players like Ty Cobb played games here a long time ago.

Discovering Brown Park's History

Brown Park is a really old park managed by the City of Omaha. It got its name from a farmer who owned the land. The city bought his land in the 1910s to create this park and its famous baseball field. Some famous baseball players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig didn't play at Brown Park, but they did play at a nearby park called League Park in 1927.

Baseball at Brown Park

The baseball field at Brown Park is a very important spot for local teams. It's the home field for the Omaha South High School baseball team. Another team, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1, also plays their home games here for the Nebraska Reserve Baseball League.

The field recently got a big upgrade! The City of Omaha renovated it and renamed it the John Stella Field at Brown Park. This was done to honor John Stella, who was a big supporter of baseball in South Omaha for many years. He coached the South High School team from 1985 to 2001 and has been an American Legion coach since 1982.

In 2019, a special type of artificial turf called Field Turf was added to the infield. The outfield turf was finished in the spring of 2020. Since 2018, Brown Park has also been the home field for the Bellevue University Bruins baseball team.

The Brown Park Pavilion

The Brown Park Pavilion is a historic building that dates back to the 1910s. It's about 700 square feet in size and has a small stage inside. There's also a wraparound porch, which is a great spot to relax and watch the park activities.
