What is the Brown Barrel Tree Like?
The brown barrel is usually a very tall, straight tree. It can grow to be about 45 to 60 meters (about 150 to 200 feet) high! It has rough, stringy bark on its main trunk and bigger branches. The bark higher up is smooth and can be white or brown. Sometimes, this smooth bark hangs down in long strips from the top of the tree.
Leaves and Flowers
Young brown barrel plants have broad, egg-shaped leaves. These leaves are about 45 to 120 millimeters (1.8 to 4.7 inches) long. Adult leaves are shiny green on both sides. They are long and curved, growing to about 70 to 205 millimeters (2.8 to 8.1 inches) long.
The flower buds grow in groups, often with eleven, thirteen, fifteen, or even more buds together. These groups are sometimes paired. The buds are oval or club-shaped. They are about 3 to 6 millimeters (0.1 to 0.2 inches) long. Brown barrel trees bloom between December and February. Their flowers are white.
Fruit
After the flowers, the tree produces a woody fruit. This fruit is shaped like a cone or a pear. It is about 5 to 9 millimeters (0.2 to 0.4 inches) long.
Similar Trees
The brown barrel tree is similar to another tree called Eucalyptus regnans. However, E. regnans only has rough bark at the bottom of its trunk. It also has smaller buds and fruits.
Where Does the Brown Barrel Tree Grow?
The brown barrel tree grows in tall, open forests. You can find it in valleys and on slopes. Its natural home stretches from the Ebor area in New South Wales down to the Errinundra Plateau in far north-eastern Victoria, Australia. It has also been planted widely in New Zealand.
