Brownstone was a popular American R&B music group made up of women. They were famous in the mid-1990s. They are most known for their hit song "If You Love Me" from 1994. This song was even nominated for a Grammy Award! Other songs like "Grapevyne", "5 Miles to Empty", and "Pass the Lovin'" were also successful. They also sang a version of "I Can't Tell You Why", which was first sung by The Eagles.
In 2019, the group announced they would get back together. Original members Nicci Gilbert and Mimi Doby, along with Teisha Brown, planned to perform. This was for the 25th anniversary of both the group and the Essence Festival.

The Group's Journey: Brownstone's Career
Brownstone started with three original members: Monica "Mimi" Doby, Charmayne "Maxee" Maxwell, and Nicci Gilbert. They formed in Los Angeles, California. The singers met while trying out for different music roles around the city. They quickly formed the group. In less than a year, they signed with Michael Jackson's record label, MJJ Music.
Their first album was called From the Bottom Up. It included popular songs like "If You Love Me" and "Grapevyne". In 1995, they were nominated for a Grammy Award. They also won a Billboard Music Award. After touring all over the world, Mimi Doby left the group. This was due to health reasons. She was replaced by Kina Cosper. Other members over the years included Kymberli Wright, Racquel Roberts, and Teisha Brown.
After some changes, Brownstone released the song "5 Miles to Empty". This song was from their second album, Still Climbing. In 1998, Brownstone's song "Don't Play Me Wrong" was featured on the soundtrack for the movie The Players Club.
Charmayne "Maxee" Maxwell sadly passed away on February 27, 2015. She was 46 years old.
